Rail As-Built Surveys

Survey-grade rail as-builts, 3D rail strings and design comparisons for track projects in Calgary, Toronto and the GTA.

Accurate field data.
Useful project answers.

Summit captures the installed position and geometry of railway track in the project coordinate system. A coordinated GEDO and survey-control workflow documents the running rails, alignment, profile and relevant interfaces so owners, designers and contractors can verify construction and prepare reliable handover records.

Capabilities

Measured for the railway.

  • Survey-grade 3D rail position
  • Gauge, cant, twist, alignment and profile
  • Design-to-as-built comparison
  • Turnout, platform and structure interfaces
  • Repeat surveys through construction stages
  • Project datum and coordinate-system integration

Deliverables

Ready for the project team.

  • 3D rail strings and chainage
  • CAD and LandXML data
  • Geometry and deviation schedules
  • Plan and profile drawings
  • Control and methodology records
  • QA-checked handover datasets

A complete record of installed track

A rail as-built should show more than a few centreline shots. Summit records the relationship between both running rails and ties that geometry to established survey control, producing a traceable three-dimensional record of the installed asset.

The scope can include adjacent platforms, structures, OCS and clearance-critical features. Capturing these interfaces in the same coordinate framework makes design comparison and downstream use more dependable.

Data structured for engineering and handover

Before collection, Summit confirms the design files, coordinate system, chainage convention, reporting intervals and tolerances supplied by the project team. Field observations are checked and organized into the required CAD, tabular or point-cloud deliverables.

As-built surveys can be scheduled at milestones or repeated before final handover, helping teams identify change while access and corrective work are still manageable.

Planning the
right survey scope.

What does a rail as-built survey include?

A typical scope records 3D rail position, gauge, cant, alignment, profile and chainage. Turnouts, platforms, OCS and clearance-critical assets can be included where required.

Can the as-built be compared with the design alignment?

Yes. Summit can compare measured rail geometry with client-supplied design information and provide deviation schedules, drawings or CAD-ready data in the project coordinate system.

When should an as-built survey be completed?

Surveys can be completed at construction milestones, before access is closed, after adjustment or tamping, and at final handover. The best timing depends on the decisions the project team needs to make.
